Cotton plays an important role in the Indian\neconomy as it is one of the principal crops of India as the country’s textile\nindustry is predominantly cotton based. India is known as one of the largest\nproducers and exporters of cotton yarn. By the year 2021, the textile industry\nis expected to reach USD 223 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cotton which is the commercial crop and the\nbackbone of the textile industry as the major use of the cotton is in the\ntextile industry since the fibers of the cotton plant are harvested and woven\ninto the fabric for production. We can use cotton seeds to extract oil for use\nin the cooking oil and for manufacturing soaps etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cotton pests are currently the main\nsubject of research. The major cotton pests are the pink bollworm which is\nwidely distributed serious pest. The Pink bollworm chews through the cotton\nlint to feed on seeds as cotton is used for seed oil and fiber so the damage is\ndouble and huge. The larvae feed on the seeds and destroy the fibers of cotton\nthus reducing its quality. Over 50% of the cotton crops have now lost to the\nbollworm since its discovery has caused millions of dollars of cotton damage\neach year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us have a look at some of the evidence,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Output dips in Telangana on\npink bollworm attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With\nfarmers completing the third round of picking in several parts of Telangana,\ntotal output is pegged at 50 lakh quintals as against the targeted 3.5 crore\nquintals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfavourable\nweather conditions and pink bollworm attacks resulted in extensive crop damage\nin the State. Dry spells in the initial stages of the kharif season, too, led\nto stunted growth of bolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About\n20 lakh farmers grew cotton on about 44-45 lakh acres this kharif as against\nthe normal area of 41 lakh acres. In a normal season, farmers get an average\nyield of 8-10 quintals an acre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\ntime, however, yields halved due to the pink bollworm menace, which set in\nearly in the season in some areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pink\nbollworm again attacks cotton crop in Maharashtra<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pink bollworm has again\nattacked cotton plants in Maharashtra this year, causing concern among farmers\nand the State government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pest had caused large-scale\ndamage to the cotton crop last year in central and eastern Maharashtra, the\nState\u2019s main regions producing the commodity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pink bollworm attack on cotton\nhas been reported this year from Akola and Washim districts in Vidarbha and\nNanded and Parbhani in Marathawada, a senior official in the agriculture\ndepartment said. \u201cThe pest has again shown its presence. It has attacked plants\nin their early stages of growth. If the pest is not controlled in time, the plants\nwill die and there will be no yield,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pink bollworm is an insect which chews through the cotton lint to\nfeed on the seeds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A farmer from Nanded district said there was no assurance from the\nState government on controlling the pink bollworm attack or any communication\nabout advanced methods to check its spread. \u201cTherefore, many farmers decided to\nchange the crop as they had lost the cotton yield last year. The financial aid,\nas announced by the government for the damage to crops, was also not properly\ndisbursed,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
