Their mandibles can easily chew into fruit. (AP) \u2014 An infestation of\nvoracious Mormon crickets in the Arlington area of north-central Oregon has\nresidents scrambling to protect farm fields and home gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ione resident Alison Ogden said people in\nArlington have spent thousands of dollars battling the bugs on their own over\nthe past couple of weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Some people don&#8217;t have air conditioning\nand can&#8217;t even open their windows for fear the bugs will enter homes,&#8221; she\nsaid in an email to the Capital Press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ogden said she and her husband, Jarrod, farm\na few miles east of town, and anxiously check the crickets&#8217; presence every day.\n<strong>She said the pests could do significant\ndamage to their crops<\/strong>. &#8220;And because we have millions of leaf cutter\nbees working in the alfalfa seed fields, spraying insecticide is not an\noption,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insecticides have proven to be ineffective\nagainst the Mormon crickets. Physical barriers and ditches have been erected to\nprevent bands from entering the orchards. But this happens to be a tedious\nwork.
