Some species consume a variety of&nbsp;plants, while others\nhave a more specific diet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are as many as 80 million\nlocusts in a swarm. They wipe out massive areas and affect entire economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locust swarms devour every crop\nin their path. Locusts eat plant material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each locust can eat its weight in plants each day, so a swarm of such size would eat 423 million pounds of plants every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Locusts wreak havoc on East African\nagriculture<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>CHARLIE MITCHELL<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>19\nAUGUST 2020<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Each day,&nbsp;specialised&nbsp;pilots climb\ninto planes and helicopters and take flight above Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.\nOn the ground, experts from the UN Food and Agriculture&nbsp;Organisation\n(FAO), government teams and farmers direct them towards the threat. Upon\narrival, they spray gallons of pesticide in a desperate attempt to subdue the\nworst locust plague in decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nrecent months, teams have saved 600,000 hectares of vegetation and crops, says\nKeith Cressman, senior locust forecasting officer at the FAO. That is\nequivalent to 1.2m&nbsp;tonnes&nbsp;of food, or sustenance for 8.2m people.\n\u201cThe efforts that have been achieved so far have had a very positive impact,\nyet it\u2019s not enough,\u201d he says. \u201cWe still have locust swarms.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According\nto the World Bank, the infestation will cost East Africa and Yemen $8.5bn this\nyear, exacerbate food insecurity and send shockwaves through the economies of\nKenya, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda and others. Residents said four days ago they started seeing the locusts on\ntheir crops and the numbers increased within a few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn a short time they\ndestroyed hundreds of crops,\u201d one resident said, adding that he had to run\ninside for cover,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But another man, who\nrecently moved into the area, said, \u201cSome of them even got inside our homes. We\ncould not go outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These past few days were\nsomething else. This is the first time I have experienced something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others said it was the\nsecond locust infestation within the last two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, these locusts are trapped using net, or insecticides are spread on crops to kill them. But how feasible are these remedies? Are they even effective? Definitely not.
