more than 80 crop species, causing damage to economically important cultivated cereals such as maize, rice, sorghum, and to legumes as well as vegetable crops and cotton.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and a high infestation can lead to significant yield loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nvoracious, inch-long fall armyworm, the larval form of the armyworm moth, can\nbreed rapidly, spread great distances and is hugely difficult to eradicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The adult moth can move over 100 km per\nnight, this is a precise reason why the infestation has spread across within a\nshort span of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larva is the damaging stage of the\ninsect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nrecent years the armyworm has ruined agricultural produce across Africa and the\nAmericas, where it originated and has now begun to march across Asia and wipe\nout the crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some parts of Africa,\nup to 70% of crops were destroyed by the armyworm, causing&nbsp;as much as $6\nbillion&nbsp;in damage across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fall armyworm attack affected maize cultivation in 122 villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mizoram\ngovernment has informed the Centre about an estimated crop loss of Rs 20 crore\ncaused by an outbreak of the \u2018Fall armyworm\u2019 (FAW) in the state<\/strong>, a\nminister said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\noutbreak caused by Spodoptera Frugiperda, an insect, has affected maize\ncultivation in 1,747.9 hectares in 122 villages, state Agriculture minister C\nLalrinsanga said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nstate government has constituted a Rapid Response Team to monitor the outbreak\nand take measures to mitigate the loss of crops, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile,\nstate Agriculture Department Director Rohmingthanga Colney said that chemical\npesticides and organic ones were being used to kill the worm in maize Asia need to be vigilant against fall armyworm invasions, after confirmation that the fast-moving pest has spread from India to China and now to South-East Asia, agricultural experts say. \u00a0 <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nhighly destructive moth (<em>Spodoptera frugiperda<\/em>), native to North and\nSouth America, <strong>has been steadily moving\neast since 2016, causing up to US$3 billion worth of damage to maize and other\ncrops in Africa, according to reports.<\/strong> The pest reached India in July last\nyear before hitting Bangladesh and Sri
