They chew through the cotton lint to feed on the seeds. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nNational Cotton Council of the USA estimates that the pink bollworm costs\nAmerican cotton producers more than US$32 million each year in control and\nyield losses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News was reported that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pink\nbollworm threatenscotton crop in M\u2019wada<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p> Prasad Joshi\u00a0 | TNN | Jul 28, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aurangabad:\nPink bollworm has been found to have infested cotton crops in some parts of\nMarathwada, prompting the authorities concerned to ask farmers to use pheromone\ntraps and pesticides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The danger to the \u2018cash crop\u2019 from the pest ahead of likely bumper\nkharif season due to the good monsoon has left the farming community worried in\nMarathwada, which is known as the cotton cultivation belt.<br>\nVasantrao\nNaik Marathwada Agricultural University, Parbhani,&nbsp;has alerted the farmers\nagainst the attack of pink&nbsp;bollworm on the cotton crop.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Pink bollworm is out\nof control in India\u2019<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>KV Kurmanath,&nbsp;Hyderabad | March 13,\n2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That pink bollworm has developed resistance to Cry1Ac and Cry2Ab (or\nBollgard-II) \u2014 the two biotech solutions currently available in India to tackle\npink bollworm \u2014 is no news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virulent attack of the pest is destroying the fibre crop on lakhs of\nacres across the country, particularly in the West, Central and Southern parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An American pink bollworm expert says that <strong>it is impossible to tackle the menace with the current two Bt toxins being used in the country<\/strong>. <strong>\u201cIt has gone out of control. <\/strong>It\u2019s too late. Too little,\u201d he points out when asked about the likely control mechanisms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe two genes that are being used in India are now ineffective. The\nresistance is widespread. There is no way we can set the clock back if we use\nthese two Bt toxins,\u201d Bruce Tabashnik, Head of Department of Entomology at the\nUniversity of Arizona, who studies pest resistance and has done extensive study\non pink bollworm and its resistance to Bt toxins, told&nbsp;<em>BusinessLine<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the deficient rainfall, the pest has triggered concern among farmers, even as futures and spot prices of ginned cotton continue to rule firm.&nbsp;<br> <br>Pink bollworm resistance towards the insecticides is a major issue of concern. Preventative treatment that might be applied during the pre-bloom period is discouraged because this can destroy many beneficial forms that keep bollworms and other pests under control. It temporarily inhibits the mating cycle of the\ninsects. The product impairs the ability of the insects to reproduce, i.e. the\ninsects will not lay eggs or the laid eggs will be infertile. The product causes\nfeeding disruption in an insect by triggering an unpleasant reaction within the\ninsect which might try to feed on the application.
