Cockroaches are notoriously resilient creatures.\nCapable of living headless for\nweeks on end, holding their breath for\naround five to seven minutes and even surviving nuclear\nradiation, the insects serve as formidable enemies\nfor humans hoping to rid their homes of pesky roach infestations. But these\ntenacious qualities aren\u2019t the only signs of the animal\u2019s seeming\ninvincibility: A new study published in the journal Scientific\nReports<\/a><\/strong><\/em> suggests cockroaches are becoming increasingly resistant to\npesticides, paving the way for a near-future in which it will be \u201calmost\nimpossible\u201d to control the pests with chemicals alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How, you might wonder, does a roach become resistant to\npoison? A single organism \u2014 a single roach, a single bacterium \u2014 doesn\u2019t become\nresistant to a chemical. The population does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In any given population, there\u2019s variation. Some\nindividuals may have an inborn resistance to a chemical while others do not.\nWhen a pest population is treated with that chemical, the ones without the\nresistance die and the ones with it live. The survivors pass down their\nresistance genes to the next generation. And then suddenly, you end up with a\npopulation of individuals mostly resistant to that chemical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cockroaches have a reputation of being one of\nthe hardiest pests on Earth, and you\u2019ve probably heard that the insects could\nsurvive a nuclear war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What or will not kill a cockroach has become\nthe source of many old wives tales and studies have even shown that a roach can\nsurvive for weeks in a sealed environment without its head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cockroaches are carriers of disease and can\ncontaminate homes and food with dangerous bacteria like E. Coli. This makes the\ncockroach more than a nuisance and a threat to human health. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

New research has now found that some types of\ncockroaches are developing a resistance to insecticides making them even more\ndifficult to kill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers from Purdue\nUniversity examined German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.<\/em>),\nwhich are one of the most common cockroaches found worldwide. Of all the roach\nspecies, Blattella germanica L.<\/em> can lay more eggs in its\nlifetime with a female producing 30 to 50 eggs at a time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, insecticides can be proving to be ineffective we need a\nsolution that is effective, eco- friendly and easy to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
