Mealybugs suck sap from plant phloem, causing the leaves to yellow and eventually drop from the plant and they excrete sticky honeydew and wax, which reduces plant and fruit quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While papayas are its preferred host, the insect also affects a wide\nrange of crops, including cassava, beans, coffee, pepper, melon, guava, tomato,\neggplant, cotton, and jatropha, according to the IITA, implying that it could\ncause massive losses to economies if not controlled on time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news reported is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arunachal: Mealy bug attack hits tea farmers hard\nin Siang valley<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A mosquito-like insect Helopeltis (Helopeltis theivora) commonly known as \u2018mealy bug\u2019 has created havoc in gardens along Assam-Arunachal boundary areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tea planters in Siang Valley including East Siang, Lower Siang districts of Arunachal Pradesh, and bordering Jonai (Assam), who are already bracing for low production owing to lack of rainfall during the summer season this year, have now been hit by mosquito bug menace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mosquito-like insect Helopeltis (Helopeltis theivora) commonly known as the \u2018mealy bug\u2019 has created havoc in gardens along Assam-Arunachal boundary areas since October this year. Tea planters fear that if the pest attack is not controlled, it will severely affect the quantity and quality of production of the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have <strong>suffered <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">lost<\/g> of about 20 percent of the average annual production<\/strong> in tea leaf business this year due to pest infestation. The tender leaves of tea bushes are more prone to attacks from Helopeltis. We sprayed tea board recommended pesticides to control the bug attack but the situation goes unabated\u201d, rued Nyodek Yonggam, a successful tea planter of <g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">Oyan<\/g> village in East&nbsp;Siang&nbsp;district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helopeltis feed on the tender leaves and young\nbuds of tea plants and it sucks mostly in the morning. The infested parts\ninitially become brown and ultimately turned black and dry.
