How to get rid of booklice?

Booklice are small, almost microscopic insects that are grouped together in the insect order Psocoptera.

Booklice are very common in libraries, paper storage warehouses, packing and shipping warehouses that contain a lot of cardboard boxes, accounting and billing offices, large secretarial offices, and other places in which large quantities of paper are stored or used on a daily basis.

In houses, these small insects can be found infesting cereals, grits, flour, and grain in the kitchen or basement. They can be very common in the late summer when temperatures and relative humidity are high. The most favourable environment for booklice is one of high temperature and relative humidity.

These pests are found inside your food packages it is because it is too humid where you store your food. High humidity promotes mold growth in cereals and other stored food products, and this mold is what draws book-lice in. You can protect stored food by keeping them in sealed plastic containers and by keeping stored food areas dry.

Areas that have the most moisture will lure these pests in, areas such as basements, attics, closets, and other storage areas, which is why it is important to make sure that valuables stored in these areas are in sealed plastic totes.

Libraries often find the pest a real problem as they like to feed on the paste found in a book’s binding. Booklice also eat lichen and microscopic mould. They prefer the dark so will scuttle off if exposed to daylight and are often found in rooms where there is a lack of ventilation and light, such as kitchens. Most often they are found in cupboards and food, which can be very unpleasant.

Here are a few pieces of evidence:

Bedbugs, book lice temporarily close downtown branch of Lynchburg Public Library

Alissa Smith, The News and Advance │Nov 28, 2017

The downtown branch of the Lynchburg Public Library closed Tuesday afternoon due to a case of bedbugs and book lice, Library Director Marilyn Martin said.

The pests were confined to the new book area and traced to a single book, which was immediately bagged, Martin said. She declined to name the book’s title to preserve the renter’s privacy.

“Any public building that has people in and out has problems with lice, fleas, bedbugs, all kinds of things,” she said.

Meet The Tiny Critters Thriving In Your Carpet, Kitchen And Bed

Josh Cassidy, NPR │May 11, 2016

A recent study published in the journal PeerJ took up the challenge of cataloging the large numbers of tiny animals — arthropods — that live in modern human dwellings. In 50 houses in and around Raleigh, N. C., the research team found about a hundred different species of arthropods in each home. The tally included familiar types — like flies, spiders and ants — but also some species that are less well known, such as gall wasps and book lice.

As booklice are resistant to pesticides, they do not get affected by the pesticides.

In order to keep the booklice away we do require a strong result and for this, our product Termirepel™ manufactured by C Tech Corporation is an anti-insect aversive which repels insects.

Termirepel™ works on the mechanism of repellency. It temporarily inhibits the mating cycle of the insects. The product impairs the ability of the insects to reproduce, that is the insects will not lay eggs or the laid eggs will be infertile. The product causes feeding disruption in an insect by triggering an unpleasant reaction within the insect which might try to feed on the application.

The product temporarily blocks the reproduction system of the insects by hindering the release of the vital hormones for growth.

Termirepel™ is an extremely low concern, low toxic, low hazard, non-carcinogenic and non-mutagenic insect aversive. It does not kill or cause harm to insects as well as to the environment which indirectly helps to maintain the ecological balance.

Termirepel™ available in the form of the liquid concentrate can be mixed with paints and organic solvent in a predetermined ratio and be applied on the structure interior and exterior, ceiling, panels, so as to be protected from booklice.

Our product in the lacquer form can be applied topically to the applications. The lacquer is compatible with the surfaces wood, concrete, metal, polymer, ceramic, cables, wires which are already installed etc.

Our product in the form of wood polish additive can be mixed with wood polish and applied on the shelves, cupboard, doors, tables, chairs, and other wooden furniture to keep the booklice away from the application.

Our newly developed product in the form of a spray can be sprayed by anyone. It can be sprayed near the wooden articles, entrances, doors and windows, etc.

Termirepel™  is EU – BPR, RoHS, RoHS2, ISO, REACH, APVMA, BPR, NEA compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Bedbugs hijack plane

Everyone has probably heard the phrase “Good night, sleep tight, and don’t let the bed bugs bite.” It may seem harmless, but bed bugs can be a serious problem. Bed bugs can be more harmful to certain people than others, causing health concerns ranging from itchiness to allergic reaction. Bed bugs are one of the most difficult pest problems to eradicate quickly. Bed bugs have existed since ancient times and are found throughout the world. They reside in unusual places; they are also likely to be found in small cracks near a bed or in comforters and bed sheets.

Bed bugs also spread infections which are more likely to develop in children, those with suppressed immune systems and the elderly, especially those who are bedridden and unable to walk. Also, some people bitten by bed bugs have experienced allergic reactions that require medical attention, especially when exposed to numerous bites.

The greatest risk posed by bed bugs is the psychological concerns resulting in lack of sleep and stress. Bed bug bites do not typically become visible until a day or more after the insect’s feeding, if at all since some people never react to being bitten. In extreme reactions, large wheels can appear. These wheels gradually reduce in size, becoming small, red marks. Bed bug bites can cause itching and may also result in swelling or blister-like skin inflammations. It is important to note that other non-bed-bug sources can result in skin irritations as well.

A bed bug bite affects each person differently. Bite responses can range from an absence of any physical signs of the bite to a small bite mark to a serious allergic reaction. Bed bugs are not considered to be dangerous; however, an allergic reaction to several bites may need medical attention.

Now a day’s bedbugs are also seen on airplane flights and they have been biting the passengers. Bed bugs can spread through close proximity with fellow travelers as well as their belongings. They also thrive where there is the frequent turnover of people. On airplanes, people are in close proximity, are not able to move other than on the plane, and their belongings are required to stay untouched for long periods of time. This is an excellent recipe for bed bug transmittal. The flight which was supposed to be a smooth ride has become a bumpy ride.

Let us have a look at some news articles

Airline Apologizes for Bed Bugs on Flight
By BBC

British Airways has apologized to a Canadian family after they were bitten by bed bugs on an overnight flight, BBC reported.

British Airways has apologized to a Canadian family after they were bitten by the bed bug
on an overnight flight,  BBC reported.

Heather Szilagyi was flying from Vancouver to London with her eight-year-old daughter and fiancé earlier this month, CTV reported.

After spotting the bugs, Ms. Szilagvi complained to the flight attendant but was told she could not change seats.

She said she and her daughter woke up the next morning covered in bug bites.

British Airways offered an apology to the family.

Bed bug outbreaks hit British Airways flights
By Sun

British Airways plane infested with bed bugs was allegedly kept in service despite staff knowing about the problem.

The Sun reports that staff at the airline logged the issue after the insects were spotted and passengers bitten on a flight from the US to Heathrow last week. So serious was the problem that an entire row 47 was closed in economy class, the newspaper said.

But staff claimed that engineers did not have time to deal with the bugs and bosses decided to keep the aircraft in service. Days later another “severe” infestation was reported on the same Boeing 747 during a flight from Cape Town to Heathrow.

But outbreaks do occasionally occur in the sky. “There are numerous cases of bed bugs being spread on airplanes,” according to Bed-Bugs.com, which offers extermination services.

Pesticides have detrimental effects on human health and cause harmful diseases so instead of using outdated control measures we can make use of our product, our product.

Protecting your garden from grass grub

Grass grub is found throughout New Zealand and is considered New Zealand’s major lawn pest. It attacks the roots of grasses and other plants.

Grubs can be found within your lawn during the late summer months after the beetles have laid their eggs around July. Female beetles lay their eggs about one or two inches deep in the soil.

Grass-grub larvae are soil-dwelling grey/white grubs up to 15 mm long with tan colored heads. Typically found lying in a C shape. They feed on the roots of many pasture species and other plants.

Recent news reported for their nuisance were as follows:

This native pest is costing our economy millions – and it’s not alone

Pat Deavoll │ October 02 2018

They’re small and hungry, and a new report says they’re costing us about $500 million a year in damage.

They may be only a centimeter long – but with thousands of relatives, the native grass grub has been causing havoc to pastures and crops around New Zealand for the last 100 years.

In fact, a recent AgResearch study showed the impact of the pasture-pest was costing dairy farmers up to $380 million and sheep and beef farmers up to $205m each year, making it our most expensive pest.

Grass grub is an ongoing problem for the agricultural industry, and while research into control of the grass grub has been happening, an answer to its total eradication remains elusive.

Dead grass? Utah grubs may be to blame

By Intermountain Farmers | July 6, 2016

If you have dead spots in your beautiful lawn, chances are you want those areas restored to their dark green color as soon as possible. Usually, the culprit is damage caused by lawn grubs and immediate action is required.

However, dead patches may also be the result of not enough watering, especially in the hot summer. Sometimes sprinklers don’t cover all the areas in a lawn adequately or you may have a plugged sprinkler head you are not aware of.

Several insecticide products are available that are used widely. But these are harmful to humans as well as the environment since it degrades the soil. Using pesticides to combat the nuisance is not a feasible way.

C Tech Corporation can offer an eco-friendly solution to the nuisance caused by the corn rootworm. Our product TermirepelTM is low-toxic, non-hazardous and insect aversive. Our products work on the mechanism of repellence and they do not harm or kill the target species but generate fear or trigger temporary discomfort within the pests that keep the pests away from the application.

TermirepelTM is available in lacquer form. These products can be directly sprayed or applied to the application as a topical application. It can be applied to the already laid pipes and tubing in the garden. The lacquer is compatible with most of the surfaces like wood, metal, concrete, polymers, ceramics, etc.

Our TermirepelTM masterbatch can be incorporated with various polymeric applications like agricultural and other protective films, pipes, wires, and cables etc. while they are manufactured. This will prevent the pests from gnawing on the polymeric application.

TermirepelTM is available in liquid concentrate which can be mixed in paints and be applied on the fences in the garden and farms. Thus, using our products, you can get an effective solution to fight menace caused by grass grub and many such insects!
