Bed bug threat in cities!

images (2)Bed bugs are basically parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. The name “bed bug” is derived from the preferred habitat of Cimex lectularius: warm houses and especially nearby or inside of beds and bedding or other sleep areas. Bed bugs are mainly active at night, but are not exclusively nocturnal. They usually feed on their hosts without being noticed. Bed bugs are attracted to their hosts primarily by carbon dioxide, secondarily by warmth, and also by certain chemicals. Bedbugs prefer exposed skin, preferably the face, neck and arms of a sleeping individual. Although under certain cool conditions adult bed bugs can live for over a year without feeding, under typically warm conditions they will try to feed at five to ten day intervals and adults can survive for about five months without food.

It takes between five and ten minutes for a bed bug to become completely engorged with blood. In all, the insect may have spent less than 20 minutes in physical contact with its host, and it will not attempt to feed again until it has either completed a molt or, if an adult has thoroughly digested the meal.

Once feeding is complete, a bed bug will relocate to a place close to a known host, commonly in or near beds or couches in clusters of adults, juveniles, and eggs which entomologists call harborage areas or simply harborages to which the insect will return after future feedings by following chemical trails. Bed bugs use pheromones and kariomones to communicate regarding nesting locations, feeding and reproduction.

Helpless Matuga residents fear for their health as bedbugs invade homes

Makongeni residents say they have unsuccessfully tried to get rid of the ‘uninvited guests’.

In Summary

  • They say the traditional pesticides are inferior and cannot kill the bedbugs, yet what they earn is too little to enable them to acquire effective insecticides.
  • They now want the county government and good Samaritans to assist in finding a remedy.

BEDBUG MENACE:

Makongeni residents in Matuga live in fear of contracting skin diseases as bedbugs continue to invade their homes.

This comes barely a month after Maledi locals decried increased presence of rats that caused great damage to food crops in Lunga-Lunga constituency.

Led by Amina Bakari, the Makongeni residents said the invasion is worrying. They have unsuccessfully tried to get rid of the “uninvited guests”.

“We have tried everything but the bedbugs won’t leave us in peace,” Bakari said.

Washington DC Is Most Bed Bug-Infested City In US: Orkin

Washington, DC, rose to the top of Orkin’s 2020 rankings of the most bed bug-treated cities in the country.

By Deb Belt, Patch Staff

Washington, D.C., is ranked as the most bed bug-treated city in the country for 2020, according to Orkin. (Shutterstock)

WASHINGTON, DC — They are the two words no homeowner wants to hear: bed bugs. Orkin, the pest control and protection service, recently released its annual rankings of the 50 most bed bug-treated cities in the nation, and Washington, D.C., had the dubious honor of finishing in first place. Two Virginia cities also made the creepy crawly list.

It’s bad news for DC, which rose from its No. 2 ranking on last year’s list to the top of the bug-plagued heap.

The rankings were based on metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from Dec. 1, 2018, to Nov. 30, 2019. Both residential and commercial treatments were included.

The best product to combat the bed bug problem is Termirepel™, a product by C Tech Corporation.

Termirepel™ works by the mechanism of repellence by virtue of which it does not allow the insect/pest to come near the application and thus it negates the possibility of an infestation. Moreover it is available in the form of polymer compatible masterbatches as well as in lacquer form to be applied on wood and other furniture. Thus it is easy to apply and safe to use. Spray products are the easiest to handle and a special bedbug repellent spray is available for use.

Termirepel™ to protect our Crape Myrtles!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACrape myrtles are beautiful trees that showcase their beauty in candy colors every summer. Unfortunately, the trees that brighten our hottest months are under attack by a foreign invader. Have you seen a strange white cottony growth on the trunks of beautiful crape myrtles? If you look closely, you’ll notice that it is alive! Meet the crape myrtle scale. It destroys the bark of crape myrtles causing a lot of damage in a small amount of time. It’s also accompanied by heavy layer of black sooty mold on the branches. Crape myrtle Bark Scale is a small insect that appears as a white or gray felt-like encrustation.  They may be found anywhere on crape myrtles, and often appear near pruning sites and branch crotches of more mature wood.

Generally, the first sign of crape myrtle bark scale is the black sooty mold on the tree bark. The scale excretes honeydew that coats leaves and limbs, resulting in a sticky coating from the excess sugars excreted from the insects’ feeding. Sooty mold grows on the honeydew.  This results in a black coating that appears on the bark of the branches and trunks of crape myrtles. Additionally, white cases are visible, and they enclose the adult female scales. The tiny pest was first identified in the Dallas area about 10 years ago and is believed to have entered the country from Asia. Since then, it’s been slowly making its way across the South, arriving in Shreveport-Bossier City about four years ago. Infestations have also been verified in Houma, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee and Georgia.

CrapeMyrtleBarkScaleShreveportIILOWIt was reported that out of the 430 Crape Myrtle trees on the campus of Louisiana State University in Shreveport, 60 percent of these iconic trees are affected by the Bark Scale. Scales can be found on various parts of the tree as oval, white, crusted clusters of insects with a powdery waxy appearance. The insects don’t seem to be fatal to trees, but they are unsightly and weaken trees so they aren’t likely to bloom profusely. The bark scale has been known to stress the tree and make it less healthy. The scale gives these beautiful trees a burnt appearance which makes them look unsightly and weak.

The below article would explain the situation better.

Invasive crape myrtle pest found in South Carolina

September 26, 2019

Posted by Julianne Mobilian

Crape myrtle bark scale, an invasive pest from Asia, was discovered in South Carolina, according to a media release from The Newsstand. Per its name, the Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae insect infests the crape myrtle plant. It was first discovered in Texas in 2004 and has spread to other states, but this is the first time it was sighted in South Carolina.

The parasite feeds on plant sap and leaves a residue behind, which can damage the crape myrtle trees, especially stems and trunks. According to the media release, the crape myrtle bark scale was found in parts of metro Columbia.

“It’s been there a while as the infestation is quite expansive,” said media release source Steven Long. “An investigation to determine the source of the infestation is under way.”

7-4-11 001Crape myrtle is one of the few trees that bear colorful flower displays through much of the summer, come in a variety of stunning colors, is easy to grow, and until now has been relatively pest free. Unfortunately, the pest-free reputation is changing with the advent of the bark scale. With their extremely high reproduction potential, there could be at least two generations of the bark scale in one year. This can be a difficult pest to control and it may take multiple years of treatment.  So, how do we fight this pest?  Keep reading!

Termirepel™ in paint application

When we think of paints we usually think of rainbow colors spread everywhere on a canvas or on buildings. Paints and coatings are no longer limited to decorative applications. It’s not just houses that get painted. Virtually all consumer durable products, as well as all types of industrial equipment, have to be coated in some way or another. Coatings are applied everywhere from prodigious bridge connecting shore of river to even a wrapping of chocolate. Nowadays paints and coatings have found its place in various sectors and various applications. 40% of the coatings are used to decorate and/or protect industrial products. Without coatings, product life might be shortened drastically and many products would not even be marketable.

Coating is a film forming substance which protects a substrate (i.e. a surface of material) against potentially damaging elements in its environment, as well as enhancing its appearance. Coatings are applied to the application to protect them from corrosion, abrasion, chemical reaction, etc. In the protective coating industry, certain coats have different functions for different industries, like reducing internal temperatures for the storage tank industry, or camouflage for military applications.

Paint industry is undergoing all transfusion in recent years. The multiplicity of cement paint, furniture enamel and epoxy paints, ponder coatings, and high performance coatings which are gaining popularity. The market has shown healthy increase in recent years. The paint and coating industry in the United States, Western Europe, and Japan is mature and generally correlates with the health of the economy, especially housing, construction, and transportation. In Japan, however, consumption of paints and coatings will experience relatively slow growth during this period (0.5%), as a result of no growth in major markets such as automotive OEM, machinery, and appliances.

Various equipments used in aerospace, defence, marines, automobiles, boats, etc. are coated with different coatings which are specially made to protect these equipments. These equipments are often damaged by animals, insects, birds, etc. Equipments like missiles, aircraft, junction box, panels, etc. are very sensitive devices. Any damage caused to them can lead to mechanical disruption, communication loss, fire hazard, monetary loss, etc.

Insects like mold, wood-decay fungi, termites, etc. damage wooden objects. There is a wide variety of pest organisms that can cause damage to buildings and inconvenience to occupants. Only in the US, pest infestations cause millions of dollars in property damage a year, the worst damage occurring in coastal areas, such as Florida.

Animals like mice, squirrels are attracted to the attractive color of the coating. These animals have two pairs of growing incisors which grow throughout their life and to keep them in check they chew on hard objects. This can further damage the technical and mechanical aspects of that object. Most bird droppings, especially those of pigeon and gull, fade paint finishes by actually damaging the protective coating and the paint itself. The longer the droppings are allowed to sit on the paint, the more damage it will do.

These pests attack on the application and damage the aesthetics, coatings of the application, etc. Conventional methods like the use pesticides, moth balls, etc. are not proven to be effective to prevent the damage caused by these pests. Pesticides are toxic in nature. They kill target as well as non target species. They are hazardous to human health as well. There is a need of non toxic non hazardous solution to prevent damage caused by these pests.

C Tech Corporation can offer a solution to overcome this problem. Combirepel™– anti rodent and anti insect polymer additive is an ideal solution to repel insects like termites, ants, grasshopper, beetles, bugs etc. and rodents like rats, mice, squirrel, beaver, gopher etc. While Termirepel™ works well aginst a wide set of insects. Combirepel™ concentrate can be blended in polymer base coatings. Combirepel™ lacquer can be directly coated on the wooden, metal application. It can be also added to the flooring to prevent the damage.

Combirepel™ follows 6 pronged strategy which is extremely effective on insects as well as rodents. It is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Destructive lantern fly!

Beautiful though invasive, no one would have imagined these pretty creatures to be destructive! But the fact is they are indeed resulting in menace in areas where they are spotted.

They call it the lantern fly!

Adult lantern flies are inconspicuous spotted, brownish-grey plant hoppers about 1″ to 1¼” long. The front wings are grey with black spots, and the hind wings are red, black, and white. The legs and head are black, and the abdomen is yellow with broad black bands. Inconspicuous, that is until they hop or take flight and show off their bright orange-red and white underwings.

The Spotted Lanternfly is native to China, India, and Vietnam, and can cause major damage to grapes, fruit trees, and other trees and shrubs in other areas, such as the U.S. First detected in the United States in Berks County, Pennsylvania in September 2014, they are spreading rapidly and present a serious threat to gardens, orchards, and woodlands.

This insect is considered a threat to crops and many people are working to try to prevent it from spreading. Soon the females will begin to lay eggs. Each female will lay up to 100 eggs or more this fall, so by destroying even one female, you are reducing the potential population for the future.

Egg masses adhere to flat surfaces, including tree bark. Freshly laid egg masses have a grey, waxy, mud-like coating, while hatched eggs look like brownish, seed-like deposits in four to seven columns about an inch long. Trees attacked by the spotted lanternfly will show a grey or black trail of sap down the trunk.

As they feed, the insects excrete a sticky substance called honeydew, which is rapidly colonized by sooty mold, turning leaves, stems, and trunks black. It also attracts ants, wasps, and other insects that feed on the sweet substance.

They are back:

Spotted lanternfly invasion of South Jersey has begun

by Frank Kummer, Posted: July 23, 2020

These Cherry Hill residents are experiencing a full invasion of the pest from Asia that first appeared in the United States in Berks County in 2014. The invasive insect has already swept through 21 counties in Pennsylvania. This year, the spotted lanternfly seems to have fully established itself in densely populated South Jersey counties like Camden, Gloucester, and Burlington.

The first season of eggs, laid in fall and hatched in spring, are now fully grown, wildly colorful adults hopping from tree to tree.

Recently spotted lanternfly has potential for devastation

By Hilary Holladay Orange County Review Feb 4, 2018

ORANGE — Watch out for the spotted lanternfly.

That’s the word from Shawn Appling, associate extension agent for horticulture, serving Orange, Culpeper, and Madison counties. The invasive insect was spotted in Frederick County in early January, and it is the menace of potentially devastating proportions.

The red-winged, black spotted bug sucks the life out of grapevines and fruit trees and typically makes its home in the tree of heaven, an invasive tree that is all too familiar to property owners in and around Orange County.

Many measures are used to prevent the damage caused by the lanternfly such as the use of insecticides, herbicides, cutting down the trees infested with lanternflies etc. These all methods have proved to be ineffective.

Now, we no longer have to depend on conventional, toxic insecticides to deal with these pests!

We need a long-term and effective solution to control their nuisance. We at C Tech Corporation have a solution to combat against the lantern fly.

TermirepelTM anti-insect repellent is a C Tech Corporation product which is a solution to prevent the infestation against these pesky little black flies.

TermirepelTM does not kill the target species but only repels them thus balancing the ecology and thus helping in maintaining the goal of sustainability.

Our product works on the mechanism of repellency. It temporarily inhibits the mating cycle of the insects. The product impairs the ability of the insects to reproduce, that is the insects will not lay eggs or the laid eggs will be infertile. The product causes feeding disruption in an insect by triggering an unpleasant reaction within the insect which might try to feed on the application. The product temporarily blocks the reproduction system of the insects by hindering the release of the vital hormones for growth.

TermirepelTM liquid concentrate which can be diluted in paints in a specific ratio can be applied to the concrete fences around farms, homes, etc. to keep the lantern flies away.

TermirepelTM lacquer can be coated as a topical application on the surface of the wood, concrete metal etc. It can be applied on the tree trunks to keep these pests at a bay.

Besides this, we offer Termirepel™ masterbatches that can be added to tree guards, agricultural film, pipes, even cables to protect them from the ravaging insects.

Spotted Wing Drosophila – A major fruit pest

The Spotted Wing Drosophila (SWD) is a vinegar fly of East Asian origin that can cause damage to many fruit crops.

The spotted wing fruit fly, also known as Spotted Wing Drosophila or SWD is a new pest problem that originated in Asia and was only first identified in the United States in California in 2008. The populations of the insect can be quite scattered. It has been found in many types of areas, but particularly where fruit is available for the fruit flies to feed on.

SWD larvae feed on healthy, ripening fruits. In particular, SWD will feed on thin-skinned, soft fruits such as raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, grapes, plums and cherries.

A single female can lay one to 60 eggs per day and 200–600 eggs in her lifetime. A female lays approximately one to three eggs per oviposition site. The eggs are laid singly and are randomly distributed on fruits.

Fruit infestation is initially manifested by scars on the fruit surface left by ovipositing females (stinging). The initial oviposition site becomes sunken. Damage is caused primarily by larvae feeding on fruit pulp turning the fruit flesh brown and soft. The larger larvae cut breathing holes in fruit. Infested fruit collapse around the feeding site very rapidly and rot due to mold or secondary infections

Spotted wing Drosophila: A serious pest for the home gardener

This invasive fly, spotted wing Drosophila, can infest and destroy fruits of many plants in home gardens and landscapes.

June 6, 2017 – Author: Duke Elsner, Michigan State University Extension

A pink raspberry receptacle is a sign of spotted wing Drosophila. The receptacle should be white when picking raspberries. Photo by Diane Brown, MSU Extension.

Since the spotted wing Drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii, was first found in Michigan in 2010, it has become a serious pest of commercially-grown raspberries, blueberries, cherries and other fruit crops, resulting in the loss of well over 25 million dollars. This insect can also be a troublesome pest in home fruit plantings, especially for people who wish to keep pesticide use to minimal levels.

The adult SWD is a small fly, 2-3 millimeters long; the body is usually colored in shades of brown, and its large, compound eyes are red. Adult females can insert eggs through the skin of healthy, intact fruits.

The next stage of SWD is a legless, elongated maggot that feeds internally on the flesh of fruits, causing it to rapidly decay and lose fruit quality. More information about identifying SWD and the damage it makes can be found in Michigan State University Extension’s two-page publication, “Spotted Wing Drosophila Management in Home Fruit Plantings.”

Tasmanian berry growers fear spotted wing drosophila is on its way

Johanna Baker-Dowdell

As North-West produce growers within the Spreyton fruit fly zones batten down the hatches to protect their crops and livelihoods this week, berry growers at an international conference in Launceston have been discussing a far more dangerous threat: spotted wing drosophila.

The spotted wing drosophila has been highlighted as a serious threat to berry and cherry growers and it has been making its way around the world, but has not hit Australian shores – yet.

NSW Primary Industries department describes spotted wing drosophila as “a small fly similar in size to vinegar flies which sometimes gather around over-ripe fruit”.

“Most drosophila flies feed on damaged over-ripe fruit. Spotted wing drosophila is a serious pest because it attacks healthy ripening fruit as well as damaged or split fruit,” the department website states.

Many pesticides have proven to be ineffective against this pest.

Taking into mind the problems faced by the farmers C Tech Corporation has developed this unique productTermirepelTM that is been made from green technology. It is 100% ecofriendly, low hazard, low toxic. It is also an environmentally safe insect repellent.

Our product is compliant with RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, EU BPR, APVMA, NEA and REACH and is FIFRA exempted. The green technology-based product can protect the crops and prevent the loss caused by the SWD and other insects as well.

TermirepelTM is available in lacquer form. These products can be directly sprayed or applied to the application as a topical application. It can be applied to the already laid pipes and tubing in the farm. The lacquer is compatible with most of the surfaces like wood, metal, concrete, polymers, ceramics, etc.

Our TermirepelTM masterbatch can be incorporated with various polymeric applications like agricultural and other protective films, pipes, wires, and cables etc. while they are manufactured. This will prevent the pests from gnawing on the polymeric application.

TermirepelTM is available in liquid concentrate which can be mixed in paints and be applied on the fences in the garden and farms. It can aslo be sprayed on the storage areas and equipment rooms.

TermirepelTM insect repellent spray can be sprayed on the infested area to repel the pests.

Thus, using our products, you can get an effective solution to fight menace caused by SWD and many such insects!

Termirepel™ against Cockroaches!

downloadWe know they are watching and waiting for the first opportunity to attack the food shelves. These unwanted and deliberately ignored pests in our houses are the cockroaches. We may be proactive about all the other stuff in the house but in case of these creepy creatures, we often prefer to turn a blind eye. The reason being all the tried and tested methods to rid them from our homes and effectively our lives have proven futile. Cockroaches are one stubborn species to eradicate. They show a fascinating and unbelievable knack for survival against all odds that is almost enviable. And they are not just in our houses but everywhere, where they can find food.

download (1)It is this habit of theirs that poses a huge problem for us. They will happily scurry towards whatever food they can lay their eyes on. And once they walk across some rotting matter (or fecal waste) some of the bacteria present in that waste gets transferred onto their feet and legs. Roaches seem to be immune to most things and their general foraging allows them to transfer that bacterium to places and things that they share with humans. It is this activity of theirs which can turn potentially dangerous for us humans. One may ask why so?

Well it is simple really, certain proteins (called allergens) found in cockroach feces; saliva and body parts can cause allergic reactions or trigger asthma symptoms, especially in children. An allergic reaction can quickly spiral out of hand and turn fatal.

The below article paints a horrifying picture of a child’s encounter with this pest where he least expected it.

Cardiff City Road restaurant found infested with salmonella-carrying cockroaches

The owner was seen sweeping some off the counter when inspectors arrived

By Bronte Howard, 16th July 2020

A popular City Road café in the Welsh capital was closed down after around 100 cockroaches were discovered in the kitchen and dining area.

The insects were found at Mr Tikka on City Road in Roath, Cardiff, when council officers carried out an unannounced routine inspection on May 7 of last year.

When officers arrived, the owner, Rubi Begum, was seen sweeping two live insects off the counter and white powder – believed to be an insecticide – was on the kitchen floor.

More insects, including German cockroaches, which pose a significant health risk, were later discovered in the kitchen and dining area where customers were eating.

Child’s horror at discovering cockroach baked into crust of pizza in horrific breach of hygiene standards that led to closure of filthy takeaway business

By Olivia Williams

The owner of an infested takeaway restaurant has been fined after a child found a cockroach baked into their pizza crust.

Matloob Hussain, 44, was ordered to shut down his business after the bugs were discovered scuttling around in pans, inside chiller cabinets and running up the wall.

Cooking equipment and surfaces were filthy and covered in year’s worth of dirt, grease and food debris, Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard.

Bags of mouldy doner kebab meat were on the floor and food was found stored directly on filthy surfaces at Munchies takeaway at 21 Harehills Road in Leeds.

It was immediately closed down by environmental health officers when they saw the state of the food preparation areas.

Derek Hallam, prosecuting, said a child’s father reported the matter on August 22 last year after one of his children spotted the insect in a pizza.

Situated near the city centre, the American-style takeaway is used as a regular treat by residents in the Harehills area of Leeds.

Its website offers ‘special calzones’ and ‘vegetable calzones’ as its specialities.

Hussain was fined £750 and ordered to pay £1,250 court costs after pleading guilty to eight offences relating to failing to keep his premises clean.

Justice of the Peace Bill Baker said: ‘What we have heard this morning has been a stomach-churning horror story.

‘We are due to have lunch in three-quarters of an hour but I think we will skip it now.’

Speaking after the hearing, Councillor Mark Dobson said: ‘Munchies took the idea of a stuffed crust pizza to a whole new level.’

Looking at this appalling article one is forced to wonder if the little kid will ever be able to have a pizza again in his life. This one surely left a bad taste in his mouth.

These roaches need to be dealt with. One very important and essential way of doing it is maintaining proper hygiene at all times at all places especially in places like eateries where food is abundant and supervision is lacking. Other conventional methods include the use of potentially toxic and dangerous chemicals as insecticides and pesticides. But the use of these chemicals though conventional should be stopped as there is a chance of human contact and food contamination.

The times has come for doing all things unconventional, and go for another alternative a better, non-toxic, non-hazardous one at that. Termirepelis non-toxic and non-hazardous insect/termite repellent. It works on the concept of green chemistry and has a mechanism to repel the target species and not kill them. Termirepel™ is available in the form of lacquer and can be applied to wooden articles such as door frames, food storage cupboards, etc. It can also be incorporated in the paint to be applied to galvanized and such other surfaces.  The Termirepel™ insect repellent spray is an easy to use product and compatible with most of the surfaces. Termirepel™ can thus help us effectively keep cockroaches away from our food as well as our lives!

The rise of the bed bug as a nuisance pest in hotels

Bed bugs are haematophagous sucking insects, feeding exclusively on blood. Bed bugs are insects that resemble an apple seed in appearance, are about ¼ inch long, do not jump and have no wings. Prior to feeding, they are flat but after feeding on blood they become bloated and turn dark red. During the day, these small, reddish-brown bugs hide in cracks and crevices of mattresses and foundation/box springs or within 15 feet of a bed. Then, at night, they come out of their hiding spaces to feed, usually on humans but also on other warm-blooded animals. These insects prefer darkness and tend to hide near the bed. They travel up to 20 feet in search of a human host. Hungry bed bugs may also feed during the daytime, especially if this is when the occupant normally sleeps. They are not only found in beds but they can fit anywhere their bodies can be hidden as there are as thin as a sheet of paper. Hotels with high occupancy turnover are especially vulnerable to infestation. Bed bugs mostly bite on the upper body, neck, arm, and shoulders but may be found on legs or ankles, too.

They don’t transmit diseases, but they do bite and take blood. People can get secondary infections if they scratch their wounds. In some people, the itching is unbearable. However, a persistent belief about bed bugs is that they thrive only in dirty conditions. Bed bugs are not attracted to dirt and grime; they are attracted to warmth, blood and carbon dioxide. This means no hotel is truly exempt from a bed bug infestation or the resulting liability, no matter how high-end and reputable. Hotel guests around the country are reporting being bitten by bed bugs and are filing claims seeking compensation for insect bites and ruined hotel stays. Treating for an infestation can be time-consuming and costly. And, because the bed bugs lifecycle shows several stages of development.

Female lays about 2-3 eggs a day in the same places where the bugs hide. The eggs are yellowish white in color about 1 mm long. Some 300 eggs can be found in cracks and crevices of buildings and furniture. The eggs usually hatch after 8-11 days.

The newly hatched bed bug is pale yellow in color and resemble as an adult but is much smaller in size. There are 5 nymphal instars. This period commonly last for 5-8 weeks.

The adult bed bug can live 6-9 months without food. The bed bug can withstand a long period of starvation up to 500 days. Under laboratory conditions, the adult may live up to 4 years.

Let us consider some news articles:

Lockdown horror: Returned traveller begs to be moved after she’s munched by BED BUGS in quarantine – as 30 COVID-19 cases are linked to Melbourne hotels and Victoria struggles with fresh outbreak of virus

A mother has successfully negotiated a transfer from her quarantine hotel after she woke in the middle of the night to find her bed allegedly crawling with bedbugs.

The woman, known only as Rosie, returned to Melbourne from the United States and was promptly housed inside the Rydges on Swanston to complete her mandatory 14 day quarantine.

But the hotel was allegedly so filthy she decided it wouldn’t be safe for her and her children to spend the next two weeks there and asked to be moved from the room.

Bonaventure Hotel Sued Over Bed Bugs

A Delta Airlines attendant has filed a lawsuit against the famed Westin Bonaventure Hotel, saying that she’d suffered bed bug bites during a stay there. According to the complaint, Chery checked into her room at the Bonaventure on November 5, 2014. She’d slept for about an hour when she began to feel “severe itching and burning all over her body, including on the right side of her face, her arms, her left index finger and down the side of her right thigh,” per the suit.

She was bitten about six to seven times, and that she could see blood stains on her bed. The suit mentions that she’d taken photos of the bugs.

A manager and hotel security came to confirm the presence of bed bugs and was given another room to stay in, according to the complaint. She dumped all her belongings, including her Delta uniform, immediately after the alleged incident, and that she’d suffered months of insomnia and anxiety because of it.

On the bedbug registry a site for guests to self-report bed bugs, the Bonaventure had 23 reports posted between 2010 and 2015.

Another bedbug lawsuit was filed at Los Angeles Superior Court in August; a family from the Bay Area claimed that they were bitten by bed bugs at the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland. Unfortunately, bed bugs aren’t exactly uncommon in the L.A. area. Earlier this year, pest control service Terminix released a ranking of the most bed bug-infested cities, and L.A. landed in the fourth spot, right after Cleveland, Ohio.

Traditionally used pesticides have proved ineffective against bedbugs. These insects have started showing lower susceptibility towards commonly used insecticides.

So what could be the preventive measure for bedbugs?

Termirepel™ an anti-insect additive at C Tech Corporation product is an ideal solution for the prevention and control of bedbug infestation. The masterbatch of Termirepel™  can be incorporated in wires and cables which are used in domestic wiring. The wood-boring pest

When you noticed a sprinkling of something that looked like sawdust on the floor by the door or in your wooden cupboards and cabinets and its drawers and discovered a few tiny round holes in the wood frame, your mind went to the obvious place: termites. Or maybe it could be carpenter ants?

Right?

While termites and carpenter ants are the wood pests that homeowners typically hear the most about, they’re not the only ones out there. One of the biggest dangers to the wood in the home comes from a bug you’d probably never guess: the wood-boring beetle.

A beetle?

That’s right.

Wood borers are tiny beetles whose larvae feed extensively on the wood. The wood worms make tiny pin size holes on the surface of wooden furniture or surface while emerging. Those tiny holes which you see on wood surface are actually the exit -holes where the adult wood borer has left.

These beetles are known for boring small holes in wood both in inside and outside environments. They can be difficult to detect as they bore through the inside of a wooden window and door frames, hardwood floors, and even wooden furniture.

They are also referred to as ‘Powderpost beetles’ since they reduce wood to a flour-like powder.

Demolition of Church Street historic home raises concerns

By Sean Flynn

NEWPORT — The demolition of the historic home at 46 Church St., built in 1779, is receiving a lot of public comment on a local website, much of it negative, but the project went through a public process involving the city’s Historic District Commission, the historic preservation planner and building officials for more than two years.

Sean Napolitano, the owner of A-1 Roofing and Construction on Bliss Road, bought the property in June 2016 with the intent of restoring it under the city’s historic preservation standards and received partial demolition permits.

As work was done on the building since then, major problems kept coming up. For example, the workers discovered the beams under the first floor, as well as the sheathing of the home, was severely damaged by powderpost beetles and water infiltration.

Domestic Sea Trade Aids Wood-Boring Beetles’ Range Expansion

 ENTOMOLOGY TODAY;  January 11, 2018

A study by entomologists in Italy found that the abundance of bark- and wood-boring beetles such as Spondylis buprestoides outside their native range but still within the same country is closely correlated with levels of trade at nearby sea ports, suggesting domestic sea transportation plays a role in insects’ intra-country range expansion. (Photo credit: Gyorgy Csoka, Hungary Forest Research Institute, Bugwood.org)

By Andrew Porterfield

Bark- and wood-boring insects rank among the top destroyers of trees and shrubs. One tactic that pest control officials have used to fend off these insects is to halt their entrance to a country at international ports. Recently, however, native species of wood-boring beetles have expanded their range within their normal biogeographic regions, leaving questions about how they got there and how to deal with the damage in their wake.

A group of Italian researchers led by entomologist Davide Rassati at the University of Padua found that two types of beetles, in the families Cerambycidae and Scolytinae, could travel within a single country thanks to stowing away on ships between ports, and they can easily travel from local forests to a port and be exported to anywhere outbound ships are traveling. Their research was published in December in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

Wood-boring beetles are difficult to control once an infestation has begun. Therefore, prevention is the best management method. Post infestation, fumigation is carried out but for fumigation to be effective, your whole house would need to be tented and infused with sulfuryl fluoride, or you would need to take the shelves to a company that has a fumigation vault.

Why opt for tedious and harmful methods when you can have some easy solution available?

The unique product Termirepel™ manufactured by C Tech Corporation is an anti-insect aversive which repels insects. This product can be an ideal solution against the damages caused by the woodborer insect.

Termirepel™ works on the mechanism of repellency.

Termirepel™ is an extremely low concern, low toxic, low hazard, non-carcinogenic and non-mutagenic insect aversive. It does not kill or cause harm to insects as well as to the environment which indirectly helps to maintain the ecological balance.

TermirepelTM wood polish additive can be mixed with the wood polish and applied on the wooden surfaces, furniture, bookshelves, wardrobes, etc.

The product available in the form of liquid concentrate can be mixed in paints in a predetermined ratio and be applied on the interior and exterior of the buildings and structures to keep the wood borers away from these places.

Our product in the lacquer form can be applied topically to the applications. The lacquer is compatible with the surfaces wood, concrete, metal, polymer, ceramic, cables, wires which are already installed, etc. The lacquer can be applied on the cupboards, shelves, wardrobes, installed wires, and cables, etc. thus protecting it from damage. The product is also effective against other pests thus protecting the trees from other pest attacks.

TermirepelTM is available in the form of the masterbatch, which can be incorporated into polymeric applications like polymeric wires and cables, pipes, etc.

TermirepelTM insect repellent spray can be sprayed on the infested area to repel the pests.

Termirepel™ is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, APVMA, NEA, EU BPR compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Fire ants: ‘Electric’ stinging ants!

imagesThe fire ant is the common name for several species of ants in the genus Solenopsis. These aggressive ants are native to South America. The bodies of mature fire ants are divided into three sections: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen, with three pairs of legs and a pair of antennae. They vigorously defend their nests, attack in large numbers and sting repeatedly.

Like many other ants, the red fire ants frequently infest electrical equipment and utility housings. Some of the common electrical equipment harmed by these ants include air conditioners, telephone boxes, circuit breakers, transformer boxes, switch boxes, electric pumps. Two types of ant activity cause problems to electrical equipment: the movement of entire colonies into electrical housings, and the affinity foraging worker ants have for electrical fields and switching mechanisms. Fire ants are found in electrical housings year round. Electrical housings (such as outside electrical disconnects, junction boxes, pad-mounted transformers, etc.) provide warmth during winter months, a dry nesting site during heavy rains, and an undisturbed nesting site throughout the year. Imported fire ant colonies are often found at the base or near electrical unit housings. When a colony moves into an electrical box, worker ants import soil for nesting. This material can cause corrosion and interfere with maintenance operations. In electrical transformer boxes, oil regulates the temperature in half of the box. When moisture from the mound causes corrosion, the oil leaks, inhibiting temperature regulation and resulting in failure of the transformer. In addition to corrosion, once inside, the ants chew on insulation and can cause short circuits. Let us also look at the reason for the affinity of foraging worker ants to electrical fields and switching mechanisms. Worker ants leave their nests in search of food to bring back to the rest of the colony members like the larvae, other workers, and, indirectly, to the queen and reproductive ants. However, worker ants can become a problem when they enter electrical equipment switching mechanisms. Worker ants of many ant species including carpenter ants, acrobat ants, and crazy ants have an affinity for oscillating magnetic fields (60 cycles per second). When sufficient numbers of ants build up in a switching mechanism and bridge the gap between an open switch, they are shocked and electrocuted. The shocked ants release communication chemicals (pheromones) or other signals that attract other worker ants. The result is that switching units can become tightly packed with the bodies of dead, electrocuted worker ants, causing the mechanism to fail.

The fire ants are commonly known as “super ants” not due to their phenomenal size or ability to leap between buildings or bridges but due to the sheer size of the colonies, these ants create. These bizarre insects look similar to garden ants but gather in far bigger colonies. In Texas alone, the act of gnawing by fire ants led to the cost associated with damages to electrical and communications equipment totaled $146.5 million per year (Lard et al. 2001).Electric ants are also becoming increasingly common throughout the UK, where their attraction to electricity causes an estimated £1.7bn worth of damage every year.
Let us have a look at the evidences:

WATCH: Little Fire Ants Are Spreading Across Israel

January 2, 2020

A World Israel News video reported that little fire ants which are barely visible to the naked eye are rapidly spreading across Israel.

Little fire ants, also known as the electric ant (Wasmannia auropunctata), derive their names from their sharp stings, especially relative to their size. The ants, which are about 1.5 millimeters long, are native to Central and South America and have spread to other countries including North America and Israel.

They are invasive ants and are considered to be the greatest ant species threat in the Pacific area since they prey on native insects and can reduce entire insect populations such as flying and tree insects, scorpions, spiders and native ants and have even led to the decline of tortoise populations in the Galapagos Islands by eating the hatchlings. They also can cause blindness in animals such as cats and dogs and tortoises if they sting them around their eyes.

The little fire ants even have an invasive effect on the economy since they strip nutrients from agricultural plants, making them vulnerable to disease and other pests and ultimately cause crop yields to decline.

‘Electric’ stinging ants set to swarm across the UK – and can cause power blackouts and fires
June 1st, 2016, Mirror, UK
The UK is bracing itself for an invasion of ‘electric’ ants after the stinging pests were imported into the UK in pot plants. Bosses at Cleankill pest control says that householders should be ‘on guard’ for the insects taking up residence in their gardens and homes. Cleankill boss Paul Bates warned that people should watch out for ‘unfamiliar’ pests in their homes and gardens. The ants, called Asian super ants, got their nickname because they are ‘obsessed’ with electricity cables and chew through them causing blackouts and fires in business and homes. Mr. Bates added: “Electric ants can be very disruptive as they will gather around cables or junction boxes and cause them to short out – this can result in blackouts and, in the worst cases, fires.
“Our main worry is more have come into the UK in imported potted plants this spring and that we will have difficulty getting rid of them as they are resistant to the treatments we would normally use for ants.”

So, is there a sustainable solution to prevent such huge damages caused by these pesky ants? We at C Tech Corporation have come up with a solution. Termirepel™ anti-insect additive, a C Tech Corporation product is the best solution for the prevention and control of insect infestations. Termirepel™ is a non-toxic, non-hazardous and eco-friendly insect aversive.

It follows 6 tiered mechanism, which is extremely effective on insects like ants, termites, beetles etc. It is available in the form of masterbatches which can be directly incorporated into the polymer matrix during processing of wires and cables. This would be an efficient way of deterring the ants from chewing the cables and wires and thus negate the possibility of a short circuit. Gruesome accidents like above can thus be avoided.

Also, Termirepel™ liquid concentrate can be added to paints which can then be applied as a top coat on the wires and cables, junction boxes etc. for protection. Termirepel™ is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It does not volatilize and does not degrade the soil. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, NEA, REACH compliant and FIFRA exempted.

The little critters: Midges

They are often mistaken as mosquitoes because of their similar size and body shape. They are tiny flying insects with a wingspan of 2-3 mm. They are also called as the blind mosquitoes.

Guess who are those?

Those are the midges!

These little critters are tiny flies, about the size of a pinhead.

Male midges tend to have feathery antennae, something not seen on mosquitoes. Also, they rest with their two front legs hovering above the surface.

Midges can be found on along the coast, shores, and beds of any body of water. They are also found around ponds or streams in late afternoon and evening in swarms that produce a humming sound. Midges may breed in water or manure or under tree bark. They lay their eggs in shallow waters and worm-like larvae are hatched.

Due to their poor flying ability, they are often at the mercy of wind currents and can be blown into backyards. For this reason, they may be considered a nuisance to homeowners. They may take shelters under soffits, eaves etc.

They easily get attracted to artificial lights at night and thus are attracted towards many homes. Spiders are their predators which get attracted to the places where midges are found.

Only the female midges bite. They need a protein-rich meal of fresh blood in order to mature their eggs. Both the males and the females rely on sugar meals for energy for flight but the females need more than this to ensure the next generation. Female midges feed on the blood of birds as well as mammals. Each species has its own preferred choice of host. Most of the animals they bite are cattle, sheep, and deer but they can also feast on human skin, leaving an irritating bite mark that can swell up.

Biting midges are most active under calm conditions. They tend to bite around dawn and dusk but may continue to bite through the night. On overcast days they are also known to bite throughout the day. In order to develop more eggs, they need more protein and hunt down blood in order to boost their supplies.

When they bite, midges firstly pierce the skin before pumping saliva into the wound to stop the blood from clotting. It’s the saliva that then often produces a reaction in humans, which can lead to itchy red spots that can last minutes or days. In some extreme cases, people can also develop fluid-filled blisters and be swelling as a response to their midge bite. Most individuals are unaware they are being bitten at the time.

Midges are often thought to be a problem unique to Scotland but that is untrue as they can be found in many Northern areas of England and Wales and, thanks, climate change, they seem to be spreading even further South and East each year. Areas such as the Highlands and Western Scotland suffer the worst when compared to the rest of the country.

Below is the evidence where midges are found causing trouble to humans:

Midges begin invasion on northern Ohio, seen on weather radar along Lake Erie shoreline

By Chris Anderson | June 17, 2020

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The midges are back!

The pesky insects are beginning to make their return to northern Ohio, as seen in radar graphics shared by the National Weather Service along the Lake Erie shoreline.

The band of bugs spanned from near the Lake Erie islands to Toledo.

Experts warn HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS of midges set to swarm the north of Scotland

By Mike Merritt – 14th June 2017

The number of the biting critters is officially up 100 percent on last year with a second bumper hatch due in weeks.

An incredible 139 billion midges are in the Highlands and Islands – 44.8 million per person.

Now leading midge expert Dr. Alison Blackwell said one trap in Glencoe caught 1.3 million of the biting beasties last week – double the number in the same period last year when weekly catches were just 680,000.

This shows that such small creatures can cause a huge nuisance. This menace needs to be stopped. Also, the solution to stop the nuisance caused by the midges has to be effective and environment-friendly.

C Tech Corporation has a solution against midges menace.

We, at C Tech Corporation, have thought about this problem in detail and have come up with a viable solution. The solution is named as Termirepel™.  We are the sole manufacturers of the product Termirepel™.

Our company believes in the principles of sustainability and eco-balance. We do not want to imbalance the cycle of life; therefore Termirepel™ can be easily described as insect aversive, used also against all types of insects and which works on the mechanism of repellency. It means that it does not kill the target insects but only repel them, thus balancing the ecology and helping in maintaining the goal of sustainability. There are more than 500 species of insects against which this product works.

The product is available in the form of masterbatch which can be incorporated into the base polymer of the polymeric applications like the pipes, cables, agricultural films, irrigation films, home appliances etc. to keep the pest away.

The product in the form of liquid concentrate can be mixed in paints and be applied on the interior and exterior of houses, schools, hospitals, offices, warehouses etc. to keep the pests out of these areas. The liquid concentrate is compatible with all types of paints and solvents.

The product available in the form of lacquer can be used a topical application and can be used on the furniture, metal decors, wooden fences etc. to prevent the pest attack. The lacquer is compatible with most of the surfaces like wood, metal, concrete, ceramic, polymer etc.

Termirepel™ is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It does not volatilize and does not degrade the soil. It is RoHS, RoHS2, RoHS3, REACH, APVMA, NEA compliant and FIFRA exempted.

Pesticides: Boon or curse?

An increase in population demands, an increase in food supply and with it increases the need for production of food sources. So as to stabilize the food supply rate, ways are found out to increase the cultivation of different crops. The use of pesticides too hikes when an increase in production of food is demanded.

The term pesticide covers a wide range of compounds including insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides, molluscicides, nematicides, plant growth regulators and others.

Pesticides are used worldwide to manage agricultural pests. They kill and repel unwanted pests, but also cause harm to the environment in different ways.

The production of pesticides started in India in 1952 with the establishment of a plant for the production of BHC near Calcutta, and India is now the second largest manufacturer of pesticides in Asia after China and ranks twelfth globally.

If the credits of pesticides include enhanced economic potential in terms of increased production of food and fibre, and amelioration of vector-borne diseases, then their debits have resulted in serious health implications to man and his environment. There is now overwhelming evidence that some of these chemicals do pose a potential risk to humans and other life forms and unwanted side effects to the environment.

According to The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, 9 of the 12 most dangerous and persistent chemicals are pesticides. Highly hazardous pesticides may have acute and/or chronic toxic effects and pose a particular risk.

The high-risk groups exposed to pesticides include production workers, formulators, sprayers, mixers, loaders and agricultural farm workers. During manufacture and formulation, the possibility of hazards may be higher because the processes involved are not risk-free. In industrial settings, workers are at increased risk since they handle various toxic chemicals including pesticides, raw materials, toxic solvents and inert carriers.

The symptoms of pesticide poisoning can range from a mild skin irritation to coma or even death. Acute health problems may occur in workers that handle pesticides, such as abdominal pain, dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, as well as skin and eye problems. In China, an estimated half million people are poisoned by pesticides each year, 500 of whom die. Pyrethrins, insecticides commonly used in common bug killers, can cause a potentially deadly condition if breathed in.

Another major problem associated with pesticide use is bioaccumulation and biological magnification. Bioaccumulation is when a substance builds up in the body because the body does not have the proper mechanisms to remove it. Many synthetic pesticides are not able to be broken down. Once they enter the body of an organism, they are permanently stored in the body tissue. The pesticides that accumulate in an organism’s body can cause harm to the organism or can be passed on to a predator.

Pesticides can contaminate soil, water, turf, and other vegetation. In addition to killing insects or weeds, pesticides can be toxic to a host of other organisms including birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants.

In India, the first report of poisoning due to pesticides was from Kerala in 1958, where over 100 people died after consuming wheat flour contaminated with parathion (Karunakaran, 1958).

According to WHO data, in 2012 an estimated 193,460 people died worldwide from unintentional poisoning. Of these deaths, 84% occurred in low- and middle-income countries. In the same year, unintentional poisoning caused the loss of over 10.7 million years of healthy life (disability-adjusted life years, DALYs).

Nearly a million people die each year as a result of suicide, and chemicals account for a significant number of these deaths. For example, it is estimated that deliberate ingestion of pesticides causes 370,000 deaths each year. The number of these deaths can be reduced by limiting the availability of, and access to, highly toxic pesticides.

Pesticides can contaminate soil, water, turf, and other vegetation. In addition to killing insects or weeds, pesticides can be toxic to a host of other organisms including birds, fish, beneficial insects, and non-target plants. Insecticides are generally the most acutely toxic class of pesticides, but herbicides can also pose risks to non-target organisms.

10 samples of pesticides, insecticides fail quality check

BATHINDA: The Punjab agriculture department has issued notices to six companies manufacturing pesticides and insecticides after some samples failed the quality check. “Bains said the agriculture department was serious about the quality of pesticides and insecticides as the low-quality products could cause loss to the cotton crop and hurt farmers’ interests. As many as 22 samples were collected from Fazilka, 27 from Bathinda and 51 samples were collected from Mansa and Muktsar. As per the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), samples have tolerance limit up to 10% to clear the quality check in the first category, 5% in the second category and 3-5% in the third category. Seven samples from Fazilka and three from Bathinda failed the inspection.

Eggs contaminated with ‘potentially harmful’ pesticide being sold in UK

Eggs contaminated with the ‘potentially harmful’ pesticide fipronil have been distributed in the UK, after warnings from the EU sparked panic across the continent.

Aldi and Lidl stores in Germany have already taken millions of eggs off shelves amid fears they have tainted with traces of the pesticide Fipronil.

EU bodies immediately notified food safety authorities in Britain, France, Sweden, and Switzerland after it emerged that eggs contaminated with the insecticide may have entered their territories.

Supermarket giant Aldi said it was a ‘purely precautionary’ measure and added that eggs sold in its UK stores were produced in Britain.

The Food Standards Agency has reassured buyers that the actual number of eggs sprayed with the insecticide in the UK is ‘very small’.

And the risk to public health is reported ‘very low’, the FSA added, although the World Health Organisation warns that the pesticide is moderately toxic.

The WHO considers fipronil to be moderately toxic, and says very large quantities can cause organ damage.

Belgian and Dutch authorities are now investigating how the insecticide came into illegal contact with egg-laying chickens.

C Tech Corporation offers a non-toxic and non-hazardous product, Termirepel™ to protect the agricultural applications from the ravenous insects and rodents.

It is an environmentally safe product that works by repelling the insects without causing any harm to the target or non-target species.

The product available in the form of masterbatch can be incorporated into the base polymer of the polymeric applications like the wires and cables, pipes, household utilities, etc. to keep the pest away from the application.

The product available in the form of liquid concentrate can be mixed in paints and be applied on the interior and exterior of the houses, schools, hospitals, warehouses, offices etc. to keep these areas safe from these pests.

The product available in the form of lacquer form can be used as a direct application. The lacquer can be applied on the already installed applications like the wires and cable, pipes, metal decors, racks and pallets from stores rooms etc.

Termirepel™ is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It does not volatilize and does not degrade the soil. Spray products can be used in warehouses and equipment rooms.
