Controlling Carpet beetles

As a homeowner, you will discover over time that you share your living space with a variety of creepy crawlies, both small and tiny. One of the places in your home which provides shelter for these types of pests is your carpet and rugs.

Contrary to popular belief, carpet beetles do not just live in your carpet–which means that you can have a problem with these pests even if you only have hardwood or tile floors.

Although carpet beetles are not dangerous to humans, they are definitely harmful to your belongings.

They will destroy your carpets from the bottom up. If your couch or chair is padded or cushioned, they can chew the covering to pieces. They will also create holes in clothing. Any box of undisturbed clothing or blankets is also a target for a carpet beetle.

Carpet beetle larvae are not extroverted creatures and will spend most of their time well-hidden, making it harder to identify them. Carpet beetle larvae feed primarily on animal products but will eat other items as well.

Once a home is invaded the adult female beetles can lay up to 100 eggs, which hatch into larvae in one to two weeks.

Those are carpet beetles and their larvae you will recognize as tiny, hairy grubs. Often what are found are the cast skins of the larvae from their molts among your damaged things. They are common indoor pests of stored products and other organic materials. Back in the day, when most carpets were made of wool or other natural fibers, these insects got their name.

They can be found on a variety of things besides carpets and are most likely infesting something near where you are seeing them in the pantry. These insects are sometimes used by mammalogists to clean animal skeletons in scientific collections. Sadly, they are also a serious museum pest and are notorious for eating insect collections and other dead animals.

Fumigation is done by homeowners and naphthalene balls are used without any instructions. Both these methods are extremely harmful to humans and pets.

JOHOR BARU: One of the state’s oldest special schools, SK Pen­didikan Khas Princess Elizabeth, is in dire need of repairs as some of its buildings have been infested by termites.

The affected areas include the school’s assembly hall, several classrooms, the surau and the canteen.

The ceilings and beams in the school, which was built in 1953, have also been damaged by termites.

State Education, Human Res­ource, Science and Technology Committee chairman Aminolhuda Hassan, who visited the school yesterday, said the Education Ministry had been alerted.

“We are awaiting a report from the ministry. The school building is 66 years old.

“The Public Works Department issued a notice in July last year to cordon off the hall as heavy rain and termite infestation had caused multiple holes in the roof,” he added.

Veterans Memorial High School has a termite problem that has cost the district $199,500. 

The Corpus Christi ISD board of trustees approved the expenditure in April for termite remediation at the 3-year-old campus, according to the board’s April 23 consent agenda. 

Elite Exterminating, a Corpus Christi company, was hired to do the work. 

Termites were found in a workroom, an agricultural science room, in an office and in several areas along the building’s perimeter. The entire campus was treated over a period of two weeks at the beginning of the summer break, spokeswoman Leanne Libby said.

Diamondback moths – The Super Moths

The diamondback moth (DBM) is the most destructive pest of cabbage and other vegetables worldwide, and one of the planet’s worst agricultural pests, wreaking billions of dollars’ worth of havoc for growers annually. From causing major problems for the Australian canola industry in recent years to causing a short supply of Brussels sprouts in the U.K. to becoming increasingly tough to control in the U.S., the DBM has growers globally concerned.

Caterpillars eat many small holes in the leaves of the host plants, often leaving the leaf outermost layer of cells intact, making a ‘feeding window’. Most damage is caused by the caterpillars tunneling into the heads of plants such as cabbage and Brussels sprouts.

The DBM’s are extremely efficient at developing resistance to all classes of insecticides, and are highly dispersive and adaptive to new environments, making epidemics of the pest unpredictable. Resistance developed towards the insecticides and the lack of natural enemies are believed to be the reasons why DBM is increasingly hard to control.

The total worldwide estimate for DBM management is $4 billion to $5 billion dollars annually, and economic losses of around $1 billion annually in the U.S.

A ‘super pest’ moth which is already resistant to a class of common plant protection is now also capable of surviving through the UK’s cold winter conditions, according to new research.

Diamondback moth caterpillars feed on crops including cabbage, broccoli, swedes and Brussels sprouts, causing cosmetic damage, which could result in the loss of up to 100% of the crop.

Brassicas were worth more than £200 million (€225.7 million) to UK agriculture last year.

The diamondback moth is often described as a ‘super-pest’ because it has a rapid lifecycle, providing more opportunities for resistance to develop through gene mutation.

The pests – which have developed resistance to the pyrethroid class of plant protection products – often have reduced fitness levels so don’t survive through the winter.

Philadelphia hadn’t been the No. 1 most bed-bug-ridden city since 2014, but it has reclaimed the top spot for 2019. The City of Brotherly Love had dropped as low as No. 10 in 2017 before climbing back to No. 2 spot in 2018. Cleveland, Ohio, held the top spot in 2018 and 2017.

Terminix reports 22% of Americans have experienced bed bug problems, and for those with children, the percentage rises to 35%.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies bed bugs as “public health pests,” and a 2014 study by Penn Medicine found they can transmit the parasite that causes Chagas disease through their bites. In 2002 they were added to the EPA’s “Lists of Pests of Significant Public Health Importance,” joining other pests and vermin, like lice, cockroaches, mice, and mosquitoes.

Rhinoceros Beetles: Devastating to coconut

They are called rhino beetles because they have a horn on their heads that looks like a rhino horn!

Rhinoceros Beetles are among the largest of beetles in the world. The Rhinoceros Beetle is aptly named because it has horns on its head, very much like the rhinoceros does.

All rhinoceros beetles are herbivorous. The adults feed on fruit, nectar, and sap. The larvae eat decaying plant matter.

Rhinoceros beetle is mainly a pest of coconut and oil palms. The beetle’s damage palms by boring into the center of the crown, injuring the young growing tissues and feed on the released sap. As they bore into the crown, they cut through the developing leaves.  The damage can significantly reduce coconut production and kill the tree. The beetle is also known to feed on economically important commercial crops such as bananas, sugarcane, papayas, sisal, pineapples, and date palms. Unfortunately, when one beetle finds a tasty tree, it calls in its friends for a mass attack!

Detection can be difficult due to the beetle’s nocturnal activity and residence within trees. Visual signs such as holes bored at the base of leaves and V-shaped feeding damage help locate this beetle. 

Damage from rhinoceros beetle worse than expected in Solomons

Damage to coconut palms in the Solomon Islands from the coconut rhinoceros beetle is much worse than earlier estimated, according to scientists.

Having spread from its initial invasion site in Honiara, a new variant of the beetle is threatening copra and palm oil production and livelihoods of villagers who depend on coconuts.

New Zealand research institute AgResearch Dr Trevor Jackson has been assisting Solomon Islanders respond to the problem.

He said it was much worse than we anticipated when the pest was first noticed in the Pacific around 10 years ago.

“We’ve seen areas where virtually all of the palms in an area have been destroyed by the beetle. So this has caused a total collapse in coconut production in those areas.”

Coconut rhino beetle eradication efforts focused on Pearl City area

The battle against the invasive coconut rhinoceros beetle, which destroys palms, remains focused on the Pearl City area of Oahu, according to state agriculture officials.

In the past four weeks, officials have caught 146 beetles in the Pearl City and Iroquois Point area, according to biological control section chief Darcy Oishi. This is roughly equivalent to the number captured the same time a year ago.

“In the last few months, we’ve been having particularly high beetle counts,” he said. “Some of our partners have engaged in green waste management, stepped up surveillance activities, with new information, and are more effective at finding things.

Preventive measures include the use of pesticides, naphthalene balls, etc. to repel the beetles. Oil cakes of neem and marotti (Hydnocarpus wightiana) have also provided good results.

The voracious fall armyworm

Fall Armyworm (FAW) (Spodoptera frugiperda) is an insect pest that feeds on more than 80 crop species, causing damage to economically important cultivated cereals such as maize, rice, sorghum, and to legumes as well as vegetable crops and cotton.

It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas and a high infestation can lead to significant yield loss.

The voracious, inch-long fall armyworm, the larval form of the armyworm moth, can breed rapidly, spread great distances and is hugely difficult to eradicate.

The adult moth can move over 100 km per night, this is a precise reason why the infestation has spread across within a short span of time.

The larva is the damaging stage of the insect.

In recent years the armyworm has ruined agricultural produce across Africa and the Americas, where it originated and has now begun to march across Asia and wipe out the crops.

In some parts of Africa, up to 70% of crops were destroyed by the armyworm, causing as much as $6 billion in damage across the continent.

The outbreak of Fall armyworm has affected maize cultivation in 122 villages.

Mizoram government has informed the Centre about an estimated crop loss of Rs 20 crore caused by an outbreak of the ‘Fall armyworm’ (FAW) in the state, a minister said on Tuesday.

The outbreak caused by Spodoptera Frugiperda, an insect, has affected maize cultivation in 1,747.9 hectares in 122 villages, state Agriculture minister C Lalrinsanga said.

The state government has constituted a Rapid Response Team to monitor the outbreak and take measures to mitigate the loss of crops, he said.

Meanwhile, state Agriculture Department Director Rohmingthanga Colney said that chemical pesticides and organic ones were being used to kill the worm in maize fields.

Asia on alert as highly destructive fall armyworm spreads

[BANGKOK] Farmers and authorities throughout Asia need to be vigilant against fall armyworm invasions, after confirmation that the fast-moving pest has spread from India to China and now to South-East Asia, agricultural experts say.  

The highly destructive moth (Spodoptera frugiperda), native to North and South America, has been steadily moving east since 2016, causing up to US$3 billion worth of damage to maize and other crops in Africa, according to reports. The pest reached India in July last year before hitting Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

“During the last 6—7 months, fall armyworm has spread from India to China, and will continue to spread in China. It has reached Myanmar and Thailand and it will also spread to Vietnam sooner or later,” says Hans Dreyer from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The worm is causing havoc across the fields in the Asian countries and has already wiped out the production in American and African continent.

Bedbugs at schools

Bed bugs are known to show up in public places, as well as homes. Libraries, offices, hospitals, and public transportation are just a few of the sites that can be plagued by bed bugs. Unfortunately, schools are no exception.

Philadelphia charter school closed Thursday due to bed bugs, officials say

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Some students in Philadelphia have the day off on Thursday due to the presence of bed bugs. 

School officials at Southwest Leadership Academy sent letters home to parents saying the school will need to be closed for 24 hours to get rid of bed bugs.

The bed bugs were found in classrooms.

The letter encourages parents to contact the health department if bed bugs are discovered inside their home.

Bedbugs sighted at Clay High School

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—South Bend Community School Corporation said Friday that there have been recent bedbug sightings at Clay High School.

Asian ambrosia beetle

The Asian ambrosia beetle, also called the granulate ambrosia beetle, is an invasive pest first introduced in Carolina peach orchards in the 1970s. They have since spread all over the United States and caused many millions of dollars in damages. Several tree species are susceptible to attack, including oak, dogwood, maple, cherry, peach, crape myrtle, hickory and many more.

Ambrosia beetles are small wood-boring insects that spend most of their lives inside trees. This makes it difficult to control. Females emerge for a short time in spring to find suitable nest sites. They usually fly to young trees (1-3 years old) and bore into branches or trunks.

Ambrosia beetles do not eat wood, but they carve out tunnels and galleries in which to lay their eggs. Their sawdust, frass, tends to collect on the outside of the bark and will form “toothpicks.” This “toothpick” frass is very delicate and can be blown away by a slight breeze or washed away by rain.

The females carry a fungus on their backs that they use to feed the newly-hatched larvae. The fungus will then spread to the tree and clog up its vascular system. The fungal infestation usually results in tree death.

It’s not so much the insects that damage trees as much as what they carry. Each species of ambrosia beetle brings its own species of fungus, which breaks down cellulose in the tree’s cell walls.

After boring into the tree, the beetles release the fungus and farm it, creating food for their offspring, she said. A new generation of mature beetles emerges from the tree, begins mating and starts the cycle all over.

There is no more accurate description of Asian Ambrosia Beetle damage than “Toothpicks coming out of the trunk of my tree!”

New mystery to bug citrus growers

LAKE ALFRED – As if Florida citrus growers didn’t have enough pests and diseases to worry about – including an 800-pound gorilla called citrus greening – another possible threat has come onto the radar.

Diepenbrock began hunting for the little bug with a pleasant name in October, when a commercial citrus grower in Hernando County reported some unusual damage to one of his Hamlin orange trees, including nail-sized holes in the trunk and a collection of sawdust at the base.

The entomologist determined the visual damage was created by several species of Ambrosia beetle, a wood-boring insect common in nature.

But they’re not common in citrus trees, said Diepenbrock and Chris Oswalt, the citrus extension agent in Polk County who took the initial report from the Hernando grower.

The polyphagous shot hole borer, a native of southeast Asia no bigger than 2mm, has found its way to South Africa and is infesting trees at an alarming rate.

“It’s an ambrosia beetle, which means it carries a fungus which it feeds its babies on. When it introduces that fungus into trees that have never experienced it before, it threatens those trees with illness or death.”

Cloth Moths eating your clothes

Have you ever delved into your chest of drawers or wardrobe to retrieve an item of clothing only to find it completely dotted with small holes? But what is causing the damage?

Common clothes moths are more predominant in warmer parts of southern England, according to a survey.

Members of the public were asked by English Heritage to monitor moths in their homes to help the charity look after its collection of historic wool carpets, tapestries, and period clothing.

English Heritage launched Operation Clothes Moth a year ago after its experts witnessed the numbers of common or webbing clothes moths double, and observed the appearance of the pale-backed clothes moth.

Thousands of traps were handed out at English Heritage sites for the survey which collected data from 42 counties.

It discovered an “alarmingly high” number of pale-backed clothes moths and also revealed that the reported catch of the common clothes moth was significantly higher in London and the South East, where an average of 23 moths were found per trap – more than anywhere else in England.

Pest control provider, Rentokil has warned textile moths are on the rise in Irish homes and businesses.

The company says there has been an increase in callouts for moth infestations of 54% since 2015. Meanwhile, callouts to deal with the butterfly-like pests have increased by almost 14% in 2018 when compared with 2017.

Dublin was the county which accounted for the most callouts for moths in 2018, with 53% of all callouts to the capital. Cork (18%), Wicklow (6%) and Kildare (5%) were the next three counties which accounted for the most callouts for moths from Rentokil.

Pesky Silverleaf whiteflies

Ever wondered how to get rid of the white or lotion coloured creatures, resembling an ant once and for all? Silverleaf whiteflies are one of those tiny pests that can engage in havoc if left uncontrolled. These tiny insects are really powerful capable of even destroying the entire vegetation!

Feeding whiteflies extract important plant nutrients, causing defoliation, stunting and poor yield. Sticky honeydew is excreted by whitefly nymphs and adults, promoting the growth of black sooty mold on leaves. Silverleaf whiteflies can make a tomato plant give off deceptive smells that trick neighboring plants into becoming easier targets for the insects’ attack.

Don’t blame the tomato. Tiny pests called Silverleaf whiteflies can make a tomato plant spread deceptive scents that leave its neighbors vulnerable to attach.

Sap-sucking Bemisia tabaci, an invasive menace to a wide range of crops, are definitely insects. Yet when they attack a tomato plant, prompting a silent shriek of scents, the plant starts smelling as if bacteria or fungi have struck instead. Those phony odors prime neighboring tomato plants for an attack, but not from an insect, an international research team found.

Those plants prepare to mount a fast and strong resistance against an incoming pathogen. But that high alert suppresses the plants’ chemistry for resisting insects and “leaves them far more vulnerable to the whiteflies when they arrive,” says Xiao-Ping Yu, an entomologist at China Jiliang University in Hangzhou.

Leafcutter ant menace!

An ant infestation can be annoying for the average homeowner, but there are other ant species which can be devastating to those who are in the agricultural industry or growing a garden. One particular ant that can be a threat to plant life is Leafcutter Ant. Leaf cutter ants get their name due to their habit of cutting into leaves and carrying pieces of leaves around. Leafcutter ants are known to damage residential areas but are also considered an agricultural pest and do a lot of damage to vegetation when they infest areas in heavy numbers. High populations of leaf cutter ants have the ability to defoliate plants in the span of a day and have lead to annual decreases in plant yield, affecting the agricultural economy.

More than a million of the tropical insects – who can carry 20 times their weight in their jaws – had been living at Butterfly World near St Albans, Hertfordshire.

They were dominated by a giant queen ant, the size of a small mouse, who was protected by an inner circle of soldier ants.

But in recent weeks, some of the ants had started nibbling on a power lead in their glass cabinet, which was linked to a water tank regulating their temperature.

They finally bit through the lead and sent an electric current shooting through the colony – killing the queen and her soldier guards. 

Most of the worker ants escaped the shock as they were in a separate part of the enclosure cutting leaves. But carnage erupted when they returned to find the queen and her inner circle dead.

Without a queen to protect, fighting broke out and the leaderless ants started dying in huge numbers as they killed each other or starved to death.

Homeowners Left Vulnerable To Leafcutter Ant Excavations

Leafcutter ants can be a huge pain when it comes to your house’s landscape and foundation.

Merchant said that though the leafcutter ant has yet to become a widespread problem in the Dallas metroplex area, it has been a problem for homeowners in east, south and central Texas.

“Their large colony sizes, impressive soil excavating power and destructive potential against plants makes them a serious pest,” said Merchant, who is based at the Texas A&M University System Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Dallas.

Not only do leafcutter ants strip landscape foliage of leaves, they create huge underground storage vaults for the leaves they gather. They don’t actually eat the leaves, but use them in a form of ant agriculture, inoculating the leaves with a fungus. The fungus eats the leaves; the ants eat the fungus.

Though vegetarian ants may sound charming, in the process of excavating, they can cause both sunken areas in lawns and create large unsightly mounds. On many occasions, they have reportedly tunneled under house slabs and cause them to crack, Merchant said.

Control of leafcutter ants used to be fairly straight-forward with a bait product called Volcano, Merchant said.

Because these ants eat only the fungus they cultivate, they do not respond to most conventional ant baits, such as those labeled for fire ants.

Bedbugs invading theaters

Just the thought of bedbugs is enough to make most people’s skin crawl, and finding them at the theater when you need some relaxation and fun time with your family and friends can really be annoying.

Health department confirms bed bugs at Marion movie theater

MARION, Ind. (WTHR) – The Grant County Health Department has confirmed investigators found evidence of bed bugs at a Marion movie theater.

The department told our partners at the Marion Chronicle-Tribune the theater tested positive during an inspection last Friday. An Indianapolis pest control company found bed bug casings in one of four theaters tested at the AMC Classic theater and bed bug eggs in one chair of another theater in the building.

The company treated the chairs where evidence of bed bugs was found, as well as the surrounding seats.

The Chronicle-Tribune reported Tuesday night no other signs of bed bugs were found anywhere else in the theater. That leads inspectors to believe someone with an infestation at home brought the bugs into the theater.

Monday night, a Marion woman told Eyewitness News she was bitten all over her back and arms after going to a movie at the AMC Classic theater.

“About halfway through, she said she felt like something bite her,” recalled Dylan Stephenson, whose girlfriend, Adriana Wisner, was the victim of the bites.

Wisner and Stephenson said they left halfway through the movie. Now, they’re concerned they may have brought the bugs home.

Bedbugs ruin family outing at Phoenix movie theater

There is another report of bedbugs making their way into a Phoenix movie theater.

It is not the first time this has happened at a movie theater, and in this particular incident, the mother isn’t thrilled with the lack of communication from the theater involved.

The mother, who did not want to be identified on camera, said her family went to an afternoon showing of Paddington Bear at the Harkins Theatres at Christown Mall. During the course of the movie, she said her kids started itching inside the theater, and it was only after the movie that they put their heads together and figured out what it was.

The woman said she did receive a full refund on the tickets to the movie, but wanted to spread awareness around the Valley.

Southern Railway to pay Rs 27,350 for rat damaging bag on train

Chennai: A city consumer forum has directed Southern Railway to pay a compensation of Rs 27,350 to a passenger whose suitcase was damaged by a rodent.

The passenger has the below words to say about his experience on rodents in railways:

On reaching the destination, Devadas found his Samsonite suitcase was cut open in the bottom for almost 6 inches by rats during the travel.  “I purchased the suitcase for Rs 12,600 only recently. And, due to lack of maintenance of the compartments the rats caused damages to the suitcase”, he said.

Mormon crickets, crop-destroying insects

Mormon crickets are voracious eaters and have sharp, powerful mandibles for chewing many kinds of plants. Their mandibles can easily chew into fruit. Feeding damage increases as the nymphs mature.

Mormon crickets will strip trees of foliage and feed on the directly on the fruit.

SPARKS – Rural Nevada’s arid landscape is covered in snow but it won’t be long before bugs start hatching.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with USDA’s Plant Protection and Quarantine program, is conducting a series of public meetings on proposed Mormon cricket and grasshopper population management this week.

“Mormon cricket and grasshopper populations have been on the rise for the last couple of years,” Jeff Knight, state entomologist for the NDA, said. “Significant numbers were found north of Reno in the Red Rock area, south of Winnemucca, near Paradise Valley and in and around Austin last year.”

Ogden said she and her husband, Jarrod, farm a few miles east of town, and anxiously check the crickets’ presence every day. She said the pests could do significant damage to their crops. “And because we have millions of leaf cutter bees working in the alfalfa seed fields, spraying insecticide is not an option,” she wrote.

Protecting strawberries from pest damage

Strawberries are one of the highest value per-acre crops grown in worldwide with annual yields of huge tons/ acre. As a result, management of insect pests on strawberries is crucial since even minor yield reductions resulting from insect injury can have important economic effects.

Damage results when females sever the strawberry bud from the pedicel or helm or axis following oviposition, causing it to hang by part of the stem, or fall to the ground, thus, preventing fruit formation.

Strawberry root weevil:

Larvae feed on the roots of strawberry plants and can completely devour small rootlets and destroy the bark and cortex of larger roots. Injured plants often wilt because the roots can no longer provide moisture for leaves.

Australian strawberry growers express import concern

Australian strawberry producers remain concerned as the Dept of Agricultural and Water Resources (DAWR) continues a risk assessment for the importation of Japanese strawberries into Australia.

DAWR received a formal market access request from Japan for strawberries, which is Australia’s northern neighbours highest priority horticultural new market access request.

However, according to Kate Sutherland of Tasmania’s Burlington Berries, who are partnered with the UK’s Hugh Lowe Farms, there remains heightened concern on the potential for major pests such as spotted wing drosophila to enter Australia.

“From our experiences in the United Kingdom, the threat of spotted wing drosophila is very real to Australia,” Kate Sutherland told Fresh Plaza.

Getting rid of stink bugs

Stink bug discovery affects imports, trade deficit

New Zealand’s trade deficit narrowed in November as a stink bug discovery reduced imports, while exports rose sharply.

The November deficit was a seasonally adjusted $402 million versus a deficit of $707 million in October, Statistics New Zealand said. The annual deficit was $5.4 billion, also in line with expectations.

November imports eased 0.6 per cent on the year to $5.8 billion with the largest fall being in passenger motor car imports, down 35 per cent due to a delay in final unloading of one cargo ship in November.

Tim Bissonnette says cockroaches have been infesting his 8 Talwood Drive for years, but the problem has gotten worse in recent weeks.

“We can’t have our cupboard doors closed, we can’t turn off our kitchen lights, we can’t turn off our bathroom lights because that’s when the cockroaches will come out.

“We give care packages to every new tenant that comes into the building of Diatomaceus earth because they are not told about this problem,” said Bissonnette.

If the cockroach has an egg sack, Bissonnete says it could produce another 30 cockroaches if not treated properly. Bissonnette says he finds them in the bathroom, kitchen, the elevator and just about everywhere.

2nd eatery shut in week by inspectors over pests

Bob Evans in southwest Fort Wayne closed Thursday after health inspectors found dozens of cockroaches in the restaurant, including among food being prepared on the kitchen line, according to the inspection report.

It’s the second restaurant on the city’s southwest side to close this week because of roaches.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health received a complaint Wednesday directing inspectors to check under the cooking area of the Village of Coventry restaurant.

“Cockroaches – treating it themselves,” the complaint said. “Don’t want public to know but they can’t get rid of them.”

The restaurant declined to comment when reached by phone Thursday afternoon.

Along with a can of roach spray on the ice machine, inspectors found “harborage conditions” and cockroaches running across the kitchen floor; among clean plates; and among food being prepared, the report states.

Traps contained more than 40 live cockroaches, inspectors reported, noting dead cockroaches were also in the restaurant.

The first time Winnet Runhare and her roommates visited their new Waterloo apartment, they saw a cockroach.
